You need an active ABN, a business name that is available on the ASIC register, and payment of the registration fee. Business Formation Australia handles the entire lodgement process. Registration typically completes the same business day.
If you trade under a name that isn't your own legal name (or, for a company, its exact registered company name), you generally need to register it as a business name with ASIC. You don't need to register if you simply trade under your own personal name, or a company trades under its exact registered name.
A business name is simply a trading name for an individual or entity. A company (Pty Ltd) is a separate legal entity with limited liability protection. You can have both. Many businesses register a Pty Ltd company and also operate under a registered business name.
Business names are typically approved and confirmed the same business day. In some cases ASIC requires a manual review which can take up to a few business days. Company registration generally takes 1 to 2 business days.

You can cancel for a refund any time before we lodge your application (less any government fees already paid and a small administration fee). Once an application has been lodged with ASIC, the ATO or the ABR, government fees are non-refundable. If a registration is rejected, we re-lodge it where possible at no extra service fee.
